Hi Wally, I agree with you 300%.   What you are saying is that if conditions (air & surface temps.) are right, the top of the stripe can dry or "skin over" almost immediately upon contact with the pavement surface, thereby preventing proper if not any beads to adhere at all.   I guess I was fortunate at the time to not encounter that degree of a potential problem.  That "fast dry" potential can happen just about at anyone's geographical location.   Windy conditions, can definitely cause a striper problems in the field whether using beads or not.  That is a problem we all have had in the past I'm sure.  Even airless machines can be affected by severe winds.  I use mostly Latex here and at cold temps., I must switch to Acetone.   Thanks for your input on this matter!

About the beader problems.  I HAVE had the paint "flash dry" on me, as in it was too dry to accept the beads by the time the beader, which was less than one foot away from the gun, dropped the beads on the line. But in the 15+ years I've been doing this, it's only  happed once or twice.  Seems like if it's very hot and a strong wind you need to watch out for this.  People who stripe airports probably know it's even spec'ed into the Circular to watch for this condition and suspend operations until "The Engineer" deems you can start again.  This has happened to me with latex and solvent paints, so if conditions are right, it could  happen.

Acetone paint is an alkyd that uses acetone as the primary solvent.

Thanks for the info...guys. I always been a latex guy////hotline SW now Pro park SW. But this current job spec'd CR...been using Axcell for the yellow and Axcell and now SW CR for the white...it certantly  has some advantages. As long as I've been doing this...embarrassed to say that i've not clear on the acetone paint. Is this CR that your referring too or another type of oil base....could you give me a couple of manufacturer names.

Keep the glass bead dispenser up as close to the paint as possible.

I use the Graco dispenser right behind the spray gun on my 3400.  Every machine I've ever owned, including the aerosol can sprayers from my "early learning days of striping pre "K" have had a bead dispenser system on them.   Works EVERY time! Never had any problems with it.  It does skin over quickly, but not within the 1-2 seconds of forward motion.   I've sprayed a centerline and went to check on it  when the marking is finished right behind me. Let's say that it is only 3 seconds to secure the machine?  Dry!  When doing arrows and stencils, that can be tricky.  You need a second person there.  One to spray and the other to move lightning fast by hand spreading.  For hand spreading, we'll use the large granulated garlic containers where 1 side has perforated holes and the other side is wide open. The perforated side sends the beads right where you want them with very little excess thrown outside the paint if you have a steady hand.

The acetone based paint is great, dries in any tempature.  How did you get the beads to stick?  It skins over before the bead even hit it.

I'm with Milt and DAN N.J. on the the Acetone.  I've used it in 20 degree temps. and it dried within 1 minute! Even used it with beads.
